By connecting newly discovered fossils with overlooked specimens already existing in museums, a team of British and American researchers have discovered a new species of giant, filter-feeding fish that was the prehistoric equivalent of baleen whales and Whale Sharks.

BATANGAS CITY – A Bantay Dagat (sea patrol) team buried Tuesday morning a whale shark, which was found without its fins and tail along the shores of the village of Maricaban in Tingloy Island here on Monday morning, said a team official of the Bantay-Dagat.

A major stretch of the Western Australian coastline is being put forward as the 18th national World Heritage site after a deal between State and Federal governments was struck to protect the Ningaloo Coast.  The site is home to the largest fish in the world, the whale shark, and is populated by manta rays, sea snakes, whales, turtles and more than 500 species of tropical fish and 220 varieties of coral.

Cruising the oceans like living submarines, whale sharks, at up to 12 metres long and weighing 21 tonnes, are spectacular animals.
 
As well as their size, they migrate immense distances and can dive to a depth of 1km. “They are free-roaming ocean species, travelling vast distances each year and known to be performing dives at depths of up to 1,000 metres,” said Jonathan Ali Khan, a wildlife documentary filmmaker.

VERAVAL: A whale shark weighing five tonne was rescued from off the Sutrapada coast in Junagadh district and released in the sea unscathed in a  joint mission by the forest officials and a local nature club members on Tuesday. Dinesh Goswami, president of the Nature's Club told TOI, "We received a message about the whale shark being caught in the net in the morning and rushed there along with forest officials."
